What Are Your Options When Car Payments Become A Burden?

unpaid-billsWhen life throws a curve ball, sometimes people are unable to make car payments as planned. There seems to be no option but to default on your loan and miss payments. This is a bad scenario for anyone.

However, defaulting on a loan or even missing a few payments is disastrous for your credit score and may limit future credit approval. It is important to consider alternative ways to handle your car finances besides missing payments and waiting for repossession.

Take a proactive approach and keep your car, by any means possible.

Options When Car Payments Become A Burden

If you are struggling to make car payments, you aren't alone. Many people find themselves over their heads in debt and behind in their monthly payments due to reduced income, unexpected expenses or emergencies. The good news is that there is often some flexibility built into your agreement for situations like this. It can vary drastically by lender, so take the advice below and give your auto loan lender a call, explain you situation and see what options are available for you.

Here are a few of the ways you can be proactive about car payments and avoid defaulting on a car loan.

1.  Modify the lease or loan agreement

This is one of the best options for those with unexpectedly tight finances. Discuss with your lender or dealership what options are available for modifying the current agreement on the car. Although, it may be possible for loan payments to be lowered by extending the life of the loan not all dealerships or lenders will offer this as an option. If a driver is leasing a vehicle, this agreement can also be changed but this is on a per dealership/lender basis. One option for  doing this is to lower the limit of how many miles can be put on the vehicle annually. The amount paid for the lease is dependent in part on how many miles are put on the car. By agreeing to drive less with lenders that will allow it, the payments will often go down.

2. Avoid Delinquencies

Once someone has gotten behind on payments, they may be concerned that the car will be repossessed. Avoid this consequence by catching up on late payments. As soon as possible, pay back the delinquent payments as well as all late fees. While it should be discussed with the creditor, if late payments are accepted, the creditor may have waived his right to repossession. However, should your car be repossessed, it is possible to get it back by reinstating the loan, which requires paying all past due payments and fees at once to make the loan current.

3. Contacting the creditor with changes

It is important that a borrower not try to hide financial changes from the creditor. If you have lost your job or had other major financial obligations come into play, you should go immediately to the creditor to explain the change in your finances. This will not only allow the lender to be aware that there may be missed payments, but will invite him to offer solutions to the problem, so as to prevent missed payments from occurring.

In short, if you find yourself behind on payments or suspect you soon will be, talk to a trusted financial advisor for greater clarity on what can done to avoid defaulting. The ramifications of a defaulted loan will linger for years afterwards. Handling this difficult financial situation properly can keep the present from affecting the future unnecessarily.

I made a loan modification due to unforeseen medical expenses and a move I had to make because of them. I was supposed to start paying again as of June 1 but was not able to make the payment. I am now in default and will not be able to make a full payment until September. I can make partial payments for July and August with the amount increasing in August. Is there anyway DriveTime can still work with me? Is there any way to get my monthly payments reduced by possibly extending the length of the loan? Is it possible to change the loan to a lease?

I called today because my payment was due on the 15th. Was told I was pending repo! I have the lease and was lied to from the start of this entire deal with DriveTime. Every time I post something online I get a call from Customer Relations but nobody is able to assist me. I need my payments changed to semi monthly to correspond with my pay dates but being told this can’t happen. When I initially got the car my sales person told me a simple phone call could have my payment due dates changed. Such a lie. Now it always seems as if I’m late and I have to call them before EVERY payment is due to see if they are willing to extend me due to their deceit. If I had known 5 months ago what I know now I would’ve taken my money elsewhere!

I can’t get a straight answer from DriveTime! I called on July 7th and spoke to Melissa about extending my payments and moving them to the end of my loan because I am moving and need the money for the move. She said no problem. While the couldn’t add it to the end of the loan now, I would have to call back before I was 30 days late with the first of my two monthly payments, and show proof of my moving costs and they would take care of it.

Got an automated call today to call DriveTime, and they tell me they don’t offer skipping payments and tacking them to the end. So I asked “Was Melissa lying to me when I called on July 7th.” and she said no, but at this time, they are not offering this option. What they can offer is paying only what I can afford for this month, yet they wouldn’t give me a minimum amount, only I know what I can afford. And I said “nothing because I am moving.” So then she gets her supervisor on the phone, and this lady says my only option is to pay both payments in full by the next payment. (I pay twice a month.)

Not only are these people rude, and can’t speak english, but they don’t know what DriveTime allows. I will never recommend DriveTime to anyone.

I bought a car in March and had a few issues . Like the next day and was resolved to have another one the following day. Car in shop for Brakes locked up. Should of returned it within the 5 days. Then air went out. In the shop 8 days due to parts in Cali so I told my husband if I am going to keep having one thing after another I will see about getting another car. I bought a car yesterday and called DT and found out that I am not able to return the car. I misunderstood the policy. Thought you can turn the car in at anytime like the commercials say just would not get my down payment back like if I did it within the 5 days. Actually it is leased vehicles only. Now I bought another car so cannot pay for 2 car notes. I have to return the DT car. I called and was to talk to Customer Relations in which they never connected me on 2 failed attempts. Disconnected me.
I only put 4,000 miles on it in 5 months if that. I will be bringing the car in tomorrow. So how is that going to go?
I was not even informed about lease option!!!!! Especially for me who put no miles on the car.

I called the leasing department to see what options I had related to my payment schedule. My payments originally fell on the weeks that I would get paid. My company currently changed our payment cycle to bi weekly so when I called to change my payments to fall on my new payment schedule they told me there was nothing they could do and I would just have to keep calling for extensions each time because the contract can’t be altered. However, after reading these comments on this site I see that is not the case in all situations. So why wasn’t your company able to assist me? I called Drivetime today exploring options with my financial situation……I was told that nothing could be done. No loan modification is even possible, it can’t be done by anyone in the entire organization. I was told I should research refinancing if I want to try to lower my payments. True story, this is what customer service told me today. I can’t get any help. This blog is misleading because it specifically mentions loan modification. Well, Drivetime doesn’t or absolutely won’t modify anybody’s loan so save yourself some time based on my experience and don’t ask for modifications, you wont get one.

Well, nothing was turned around for me. Still no help. Learn from my experience. There is no such thing as loan modification and there is absolutely no way to lower your payments. Financial difficulties or not, Drivetime isn’t going to budge, matter of sheer fact. There will be no concessions of any kind. The customer relations person I spoke with mentioned a website for help with paying bills. Funny really…. want to help me pay my bills? Tell me how to save a few bucks on my bi-weekly car payment and I’ll be okay. But…. that would involve working with you and apparently, that’s not Drivetimes’ policy. They would rather work against you. Folks, I can’t make this stuff up, learn from the information I’m sharing with you today.

Hi Christopher – I have connected with our Customer Relations Department and they have informed me that they have already completed a loan modification by changing your payment due date. Unfortunately, this is all we can do as we do not offer refinancing options or add years to loans. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

That is incorrect, my change regarding payment due dates was completed last month. That was a completely unrelated piece of business that needed to be taken care of. It had nothing to do with my most recent request.

I missed 1 payment called advice I was in the hospital and soon as I was released I would take care of the payment. I was told my account had been reviewed for repossession and to have some one else make the payment for me.I have had the the vehicle for 6 six months always paid on time only to be told my vehicle could be repossessed for me being sick. DT only cares about the money even when you try to do was right and inform them of a late payment

So i have had my car with DT for almost 3 years and i have spent more in repairs then payments. Infact, I am constantly behind because of all the car problems. I have begged, cried and fight with you guys for help. The most I have gotten is some payments pushed to end of my contract-not helpful in long run. The car breaking down has cost me two good jobs and now im having a hard time finding a new job. I have been asking since having the car for week 2 for you to let me give it back and completly out of the contract. I cant afford these payments and the cost of constent repairs. Can you help me? If i cant get out of this car loan then im afraid ill have to file bankruptcy because of the personal loan and credit card balances i have due to car repairs. Please dont say call in- that hasnt worked!

I called on 12-14 and set up a post dated payment which would have my account current. I am behind 2 payments dilute to lack of work available at my job and I explained this to your rep today. The rep took my debit card info, I told him which day my deposit would hit and he said everything was all good. Well at 11pm I hear a truck outside my home and what do you know, my vehicle has been repoed. I was NEVER informed that my vehicle was up for repo! Why agree to a future payment that is guaranteed only to repo it the same day?! So now I’ve missed work, my son has to miss school and I can’t contact you because it is after business hours. I feel like I am back at square one without a vehicle and I also risk losing my job. Thanks DT

My name is John and I am wounded soldier who uses my vehicle to get around. I live on a fixed income and am only paid once a month. I was notified that drivetime in Fayetteville NC did not receive my payment for the month of december. The problrm is that they didnt notify me until 14 days laters. I was under the impression that drivetime received payment since I did not hear from them. I asked the rep to work with me and if they could just give me until the 31st to make my Dec and January payments and theybwere not helpful at all. I even asked if I could make a partial 50% payment and they said no your vehicle can be picked up any day even if I make the partial payment. I cannot afford to be without a vehicle as it is my only means of transportation and I am the single father of 2 small children 6 and 4. My bank closed my account because a foreign company tried to access my account and use it fraudulently. The funds that were in the account are being mailed to me it just takes 7 to 10 business days. I have no problem making my payments but this mayter was out of my hands. Can anyine help me?

I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT A REPO WAS OUT ON MY CAR NOR HAS ANYONE TRIED CALLING ME OR MY FINACEE… NOW THEY ARE SAYING THAT WE HAVE TO PAY 442.76 (WHICH IS 1 MONTH WORTH OF PAYMENTS) PLUS A 300.00 REPO FEE AND ANOTHER 2 125.00 FEES…. Hi,

I purchased a vehicle from DriveTime 11/2015 i have never missed not been late on a payment but I have been considering giving this vehicle back. The only thing stopping me is I am afraid of it affecting my credit. The payments are just to expensive I’m paying $435 for a 09 vehicle. It’s starting to become a burden plus seeing my same vehicle at another dealer for $7,000 less didn’t help. DriveTime has a good concept but is also taking advantage of people with lower credit by doubling their car prices. I have a car worth 10,000 when I’m done with 72 payments I will have paid DriveTime almost $32,000. Does a voluntary repossession affect your credit being so DriveTime is a buy here pay here?

Question:
I had a 30 day late payment last year reported from Drivetime to my credit report. It was my mistake. I was on a business travel in europe for 4 weeks and forgot to activate auto payment. After that I made every month a higher payment to keep up with the missed payment but after a month i got another 30 day late payment reported. So i paid more but the month after i got another 30 day late. So i have 3 – 30 day late payments on my credit score and all this started with one single missed payment. Is there a way that drivetime can remove this late payments because this is a big problem right now for me because I’m in the process to buy a house and the only negative part on my credit report are the 3 late payments from Drivetime.

So, due to multiple issue with the car I got from Drive Time, I went out and brought another car. I would like to keep paying for this car and keep it as a extra. But I’m not able to afford two car notes at it current price. I contacted Drive Time to see if they will work with me on the payments and they said there is nothing they can do. That once the contract is signed then Drive Team will not change the payments and that if you wish for the payments to change you will have to go to a whole different company to refinance. So I just wanting to give it back and take the hit on it.

I’m currently a new member to drivetime.com. When I got my 2012 Mazda 5 it was great. they had good people working there and very friendly but. When you only had the vehicle for a week and 4 days and the the car starts acting up and you go through the insurance they provide you with. It gets pretty difficult to be happy with the car you justed bought. I have a big family of 7 people and we don’t have an extra car setting around when the car is still in the shop to be worked on. The car been in the shop for 3 day and they just now found out what’s wrong with. It either wait for the car to get out or go rent a car that cost 25.00 day while my Mazda is in the shop collecting dusted. It crazy huh ,,,,

Now that I educated myself it was a complete ripoff. The car was only worth $7200 at time of purchase KBB. You sell it to me for $16500. Somehow with APR the total price is $31000 over the course of 60 months. Then if I go look at the payoff amount it only goes down maybe $200 per month when I pay $500 per month. The payoff amount is still 3 times more than the car is worth meaning that NOBODY will refinance it or take it as a trade in except Drivetime. So yeah I’ll be bringing this buddy back soon.

Due to trying to move out of state and two deaths in the family I’ve currently fallen behind on making payments. I’m possibly about 90 days past due and I just made a payment at Walmart. I’ve tried to get in touch with all today but they said that I’ve called after hours. I’m just trying to make sure my car doesn’t get reposessed. I bought a car from the Clearwater location December 2015. 9 days after I brought it home the transmission started slipping. I took it to the shop to get transmission replaced and it took them 33 days now my “warranty” said it would cover it all rental car and all. I couldn’t get the rental car in time due to not having my debit card in my name yet so I lost one of my jobs. In this time I an paying $240 for insurance on the caliber, $219 every 2 weeks for my caliber and ended up paying $1300 out of pocket for the rental they promised to reimburse which I only ended up getting g $840 back from rental and my transmission still has the same problems and my check engine soon light was dis connected. So now I can’t afford to pay on this car and pay to get it fixed. I totally got screwed on this deal and no one wants to make this rite!

hello I have 7 payments left on my vehicle. I just logged into my account and seen that I am behind. My vehicle had broken down last month, & I paid out of pocket to fix it & also maintained my payments as best I could. I didn’t drive the vehicle for 6 weeks. I attempted to make a payment today at a local Walmart and also online, but Bridge crest isn’t allowing me. I would like to finish paying off this vehicle as I am expecting a baby, & would love to keep my vehicle I have had for 3 years. what are my options? every time that i call customer service, they tell me that as long as I attempt to make a payment or pay at least most of the bi-weekly balance I shouldn’t worry about repossession. I would hate to get it repossessed after the large investment & repairs I have just recently had done. I am not sure of my options and I am told different things every time I call.

I was able to call Bridgecrest and get my next payment split up between two other payments later down the line, now I’m not sure if I’ll still be able to make that payment. My dad told me that some back’s allow you to skip a payment by adding the impending payment to the end of your lease, is that something you guys due or is there anything else I can do? First off – I’m a paralegal. Second I know the laws regarding this – legally you have to tell me what time period a repossession will start when/if I fall delinquent. I will be taking a 12 week unpaid FMLA leave in a couple of months. The state is Georgia. The deferment I spoke to earlier today was a joke (it actually makes the cost of the car go up) and there are no interest only payment options when a debtor faces hardship. No offense but that is terrible business logic. I understand this is a company dealing with high risk loans, however… You aren’t helping anyone when we have no choice due to a medical hardship. I’ve had this loan (not a lease) for two years and never have been late. I’m demanding to know the legal procedure used in my state by your company – with detailed timeline on what happens when a payment goes default.

No, I will not call your number as I called them earlier and they are too uneducated or scared to tell me what I have a legal right to know. If I’m not informed in a timely manner I will default on the payment (since obviously your company doesn’t care) and file a chapter 7 in order to halt any future legal proceedings by your company. Either work with me – or be out the 13k I owe left on the car.

I purchased a vehicle from you 4 months ago. I specifically asked the woman that sold me the car if the battery and breaks were new. She stated both had just been replaced. Well here we are 4 months later and my battery has to be replaced because its 3 YEARS OLD! Then the same day the cars transmission goes out and that NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. Then I get a phone call from the repair shop saying the BREAKS need to BE REPLACED. I was lied to and judging by the reviews, Drive time is known for lying and scamming people. You guys are horrible. I will be contacting my local news station and the BBB. I will also be looking into filling Bankruptcy because I will not be stuck with this piece of crap you sold me. What’s worse is that you refuse to replace the brakes and battery and sold the car with a 3 year old battery and no breaks!

I’v had my truck for 3 years paying $192 every 2 weeks and I still owe $8000 on a truck that I feel isn’t worth nowhere near how much was put on it ( 06 Chevy Colorado manual transmition ). I only make $9 an hr and it’s getting to the point where I can’t save any money and I don’t even pay rent . Im very tempted to just give the truck back and find a cheap truck for $1000 so I’m not hurting for money anymore .

Why do you keep saying 90 days behind for repo. That is a bold faced lie. We were only 2 payments behind due to the fact that we have had numerous issues with the vehicle and unforeseen medical expenses and you sebt the repo company which by the way ruined our breaks by leaving the vehicle in park and dragging it out of our driveway. We currently have s lawsuit against the towing company. It has been an absolute nightmare dealing with all of you. I have tried customer relations and I spoke with you guys again today and was assured that I could call back about our payment arrangement but I have to tell you the anxiety I am going through is unbelievable because of everything we have been through with your company. When car payments become a burden, I think It’s best off selling your car on your own and then use the proceeds to buy a new car. Trading it in the dealer tends to give you a low ball offer or your best bet might be to go through a free credit counseling session, which will help you develop a game plan.

I called the Drivetime number but the person that answered clearly had no answer than “no sorry”. I bought a car through Drivetime in 2015 – I have since been able to raise my credit score and purchase a truck through Ford. My question is am I able to sell this with the option of someone taking over the loan? The blue book value is obviously not what is owed on the car but would be a good option for someone that needed a car with no downpayment. Is there such an option? Or is that a Bridgecrest question? Drivetime should consider a “resale” program for instances like this.

In February of 2017 I financed my first vehicle with DriveTime. While it was an exciting time in my life, I have to say it was the worst decision of my life. My 2009 Nissan Maxima has given me nothing but problem after problem. Within the first week, my car shut down and completely stopped driving in the middle of the expressway. Talk about dangerous. At this point, I am so desperate to have a working vehicle that I can rely I, that I am considering voluntary repo just to get rid of this car…. It just really bums me out because I made a poor decision at a young age and now I can’t even get behind the wheel of my car without anxiety it’ll break down. I feel trapped and like there is no way out other than to destroy my credit. Is there any advice you can offer to work with me in getting out from this vehicle?

I have a Benz I bought in NLR, AR when this office was open. From day 1 it shook when I get to certain speed I went by the dealership they said couldn’t do anything call extended warranty # I did finally got a shop to look at it they said it’s torque converter & transmission. I can’t be without my car I work 6 days a week. To top it off my car LEAKS. I had huge amount of standing water in drivers floorboard. (I have pics) it has soaked the fuse panel & has high pitched noise going off 24/7. Can I get a rental car? It’s not my fault this has to be fixed & now dealership is closed. I’m even willing to switch cars & finance another 1 through DriveTime since this one has many big issues. Please let me know how to go about this. I like my car just fine but hate the issues I had had since day 1.

Hello Holly,

Thank you for reaching out to us and I apologize for the mechanical concerns you have experienced since purchasing your vehicle.

Please know that all of our vehicles are pre-owned and inspected prior to being placed on our sales lots. In addition, since all of our vehicles are pre-owned and we are unable determine if or when mechanical concerns may arise, each vehicle sold comes with a 30 day/1,500 mile Limited Warranty along with an optional Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) to assist in most situations.

There will be times when repairs needed on a vehicle would be considered a non-covered component and would be considered cost of ownership.

Regarding the rental, please know that per the terms of the VSC, SilverRock provides rental reimbursement up to a daily rate of $25.99, for up to 5 days, as long as the repairs are covered components and the labor time is 8 or more hours.

Again, I am sorry for the mechanical issues you have dealt with over time. Should you wish to discuss this matter further, please contact our Corporate Customer Relations Department at (800) 965-8043.

NEVER BUY from DRIVETIME. Their cars all have issues, their mechanics and sales people suck, and they hit your credit terribly, and thats not even counting the terrible APR that you have to pay for a car which so many issues. Hello Chesa,

Thank you for providing your review and I am sorry to hear of your disappointment in regards to your sales experience.

Please know that all of our vehicles are pre-owned and inspected prior to being placed on our lots for sale. Since our vehicles are pre-owned we can never determine if or when mechanical concerns may arise. For this reason, all of our vehicles come with a 30 day/1,500 mile Limited Warranty, along with an optional Vehicle Service Contract to assist in most situations.

Our main goal is to provide the best in customer service and to treat each and every customer with the utmost respect, along with a professional and comfortable atmosphere upon their arrival.

In addition, our objective is to help build or re-build our potential customers credit and we want to make sure that our customers are set up for financial success. It is important to know that we provide a Federal Truth in Lending Disclosure during the contracting process. This disclosure details the APR, finance charge, amount financed, total amount expected to be paid throughout the life of the loan, and total sales price.

With that being said, again, my apologies pertaining to your overall experience that you encountered. Should you wish to discuss these concerns further, please contact our Customer Relations department at (800) 965-8043 and a representative will be glad to assist.

In reference to the possibility of decreasing the amount of your regularly scheduled payments, it is important to know that this would require you to completely refinance your loan.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out. We’re happy to hear that you are looking to trade-in your current vehicle and potentially purchase one from DriveTime!

In order to see what your options might look like, I would strongly encourage you to contact our sales team by phone at (800) 965-8042.

However, please keep in mind that we cannot accept any trade-ins with a negative equity. This means that, if the value of the vehicle as determined by our evaluation is less than the overall balance owed on the vehicle, then we would not be able to accept it as a trade-in toward a new purchase from our dealership.

Thanks again for reaching out! We look forward to working with you.

My loan company USAA had sent you a check that is for one of your current customers. The check was confirmed received by A. Bowler at 7300 E Hampton Ave suite 101 Mesa AZ at 0950 AM on Tuesday September 22nd. How long does it take for your company to deposit the check?

Ive had this car for 10 months now and I feel like I’m paying more for the car than what it’s worth. I want to get rid of it as easily as possible. How do I do this?
